Introduction
The Algarve region in southern Portugal is filled with stunning locations, offering endless opportunities for exploration. To make the most of your stay at Colina Verde Resort, we’ve selected a few lesser-known gems that are often overlooked in favour of the region’s more famous tourist spots. All of these destinations are within a 20-minute drive from the resort and are perfect for a day of discovery and relaxation.
Ilha da Armona
Located in the municipality of Olhão, Ilha da Armona is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
During the summer months, the island is accessible via a ferry that runs hourly. Water sports enthusiasts will find a variety of activities to enjoy, including canoeing, sailing, diving, and the ever-popular recreational fishing. In 2019, Armona was recognised as one of the cleanest beaches in the world. It’s an ideal destination for those seeking peace and quiet and the only vehicles permitted here are for emergency or cleaning services. Beyond the inhabited area, the island is rich in natural flora and fauna, including local wildlife such as chameleons and other protected species.
Ilha Deserta
Known as the southernmost point of mainland Portugal, Ilha Deserta lives up to its name, it is completely uninhabited and can only be reached by boat. The peaceful 20-minute journey to the Island, offers a chance to admire the many protected bird species that inhabit the surrounding wetlands. Once there, you’ll find a wide stretch of golden sand and crystal – clear waters. The only buildings on the island are beach facilities offering services and the chance to try activities like windsurfing or boat tours.
Ilha da Culatra
Ilha da Culatra, located in the Faro area, is the perfect destination for those looking to escape the crowds and reconnect with nature. With its idyllic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and strong local culture, the island offers an authentic Algarve experience. Several seaside restaurants here specialise in traditional dishes like arroz de lingueirão (razor clam rice).
Thanks to its clear waters with visibility up to 15 meters, the island is also a top spot for diving enthusiasts. Don’t miss the chance to visit the lighthouse, walk along the wide sandy beach, explore the small fishing village, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins nearby.
